Synthetic underlayment is installed over the roof deck and beneath shingles. It is made from engineered materials and is commonly used instead of traditional felt paper.
Why It Matters
Synthetic underlayment can provide better tear resistance, walking traction, and weather exposure tolerance during installation. It still needs to be installed with proper overlaps and fastening.
Common Problems
Problems include wrinkles, loose fastening, improper laps, leaving it exposed too long, and assuming it replaces ice and water shield in vulnerable areas.
Exterior Echelon Notes
Exterior Echelon considers synthetic underlayment one part of the complete roof system, along with decking, ventilation, flashing, and manufacturer installation requirements.
